About us

Markit On Demand, is a design driven technology company based in Boulder, Colorado. We’re part of Markit, a global financial information company that’s headquartered in London. Here in Boulder, where the sun shines 300 days a year, we have a team of 400+ professionals dedicated to the presentation of financial content and data for our clients in the Financial Services, Media and Healthcare industries. On any given day, you might work with a colleague in New York, a retail brokerage in the US, a newspaper in Germany, a bank in Africa, or throw ideas around with an economist in our London office. And that’s before you meet up with co-workers for a foothills hike or brewery happy hour.

As storytellers, we use work to understand content. We use this data to construct narratives that take advantage of technology and translate information into elegant user experiences, used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world, every day.

We love a collaborative environment where ideas are valued. Using tools like 50-foot whiteboards and lots of sticky notes we draw out big ideas, or a thousand smaller ones. Our work is a constant cycle of listening, showing, and telling to create sites, apps and tools that help people understand complex information.

Our Process

  1. Define

What does tomorrow’s data look like? The success of any project hinges on our ability to work with our clients to answer that question. It is in this phase that we use the tools of inquiry and collaboration to establish business objectives, goals and plan to ensure that our train of ingenuity comes in on time.

    • Create scope documents to identify goals, define a project’s success, outline deliverables, timelines and risks.
    • Gather findings through research and user interviews.
    • Audit data to define needs and sources.
  2. Design

Design is an iterative process of concepting and strategy to create the interactions of the future. Design also helps in coordinating and distilling the ideas that define the project, as well as the development of graphic collateral.

    • Layout mock-up wireframes – a visual framework with limited detail to give a sense of the page and define templates needed.
    • Convert wireframes to pixel-perfect prototypes. The final visual designs include full brand implementation and graphic detail.
    • Hand off templates and work with the development team for review and assessment.
  3. Develop

How are we going to build it? We do everything possible to balance design with the realities of available technologies today, that’s why we try to include our technical specialists in the conversation as early as possible. In this phase, the imagined product comes to life. Software is developed, interfaces are constructed, content is created, front and back-end coding occurs and data integration happens.

    • Code the functionality into the system and build the designs in close collaboration with design.
    • Integrate new data feeds and monitor data quality.
  4. Deploy

How do we make sure that it works everyday, all of the time, around the globe? We work hard to ensure the product vision functions as expected through close collaboration between design, development and quality assurance.

    • Transition to internal and external QA groups for unit and integration testing.
    • Support the site post launch to evaluate performance metrics, manage maintenance, and subsequent evolution.

Technology

We have three data centers in North America dedicated to our clients. With thousands of servers running in our facilities, we’re responsible for delivering critical financial data to users on every continent. Whether to the home page of the Financial Times or to a research analyst’s desktop or on CNBC, every web site or mobile app we design, build and host has to look great and perform well under pressure.

  • Our code runs on servers, in browsers, and on the phone in your pocket
  • We speak in many tongues, but are most comfortable with C#, C++, Javascript, and T-SQL.
  • We fell in love with jQuery long ago. It really is better than the bread we were slicing.
  • We wholeheartedly embrace the potential of HTML5 and CSS3. We push the limits of browsers that don’t see eye to eye.
  • A mix of Windows and Linux servers in production. IIS, Apache, and NGINX handle our web traffic. Data lives in SQL Server, MySQL, and Cassandra.
  • Our workstations are our playgrounds, and they are chock full of goodies. Windows or Mac OS, depending on what you’re building.
  • Visual Studio, Xcode, Eclipse, vim, Sublime Text, Notepad++ (insert your favorite IDE and text editor here). SVN and GIT for source control.
